The EPA research programme has allocated budget to provide funding to support workshops, seminars and other events.

Normally the amount of funding per event will not exceed €3,000.

Funding is provided only for events with a clear relevance to Irish environmental research priorities and on the condition that the events are run on a not-for-profit basis.

The event should showcase current national research by the organisers and EPA funded-groups, and also could include an international keynote speaker.

In terms of audience/participants, the event should target other researchers working in the area and the expected end-users of the research (e.g. Local Authorities, EPA, DECLG, Industry).

Applications should be made online via the External linkEPA’s Grant Management and Application Portal.

Funding is available as a rolling call with four submission deadlines each year (31st December; 31st March; 30th June; 30th September).

Applications for events taking place within the first 28 days of a call period must be submitted prior to the closure of the penultimate call period (i.e. an application for an event taking place between 1st and 28th January must be submitted by the deadline of 30th September).

A response shall be communicated to applicants within one month of the call deadline date.

Requests for funding should be made using the appropriate application form using the following headings:

  • Background and Work Programme (20 marks)
  • Relevance to Environmental Research in Ireland (30 marks)
  • Expected outputs and benefits (30 marks)
  • Environmental Policy (20 marks)

Applications will be judged competitively against others received in the period using these criteria and with regard to the need to balance funding across institutions and thematic areas.

Successful applicants will be expected to provide the EPA with an ex-post report on the event, including photographs where relevant for publication on our website.

ESAI/EPA Grassroots Workshop Support Scheme

ESAI with the support of the EPA are delighted to announce our new Workshop Support Scheme.

The scheme is open to postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers who are members of the ESAI and who are conducting research relevant to the EPA remit.

The purpose of the ESAI Grassroots Workshop Support Scheme is to assist early stage researchers with the delivery of workshops that fall within the remit of the ESAI and EPA.

Workshops are essential for the dissemination of research, knowledge exchange, development and exposure of early career researchers and for establishing new collaborations.

They are a key networking tool, and an opportunity for early-stage researchers to increase their profile within a field of study.

The theme of the workshop must fit within the remits of the EPA and ESAI, who must be acknowledged in conference publicity materials.

The amount of the award for each event is €600 which is meant to be a contribution to the overall cost of the event.

External linkApplications can be submitted at any time and are assesed six times per year, by a panel drawn from the ESAI Council

Applications should include a one-page summary CV of the main applicant.

Applications will be assessed on the quality of the proposal, how the event fits with the remits of the ESAI and EPA, and on the expected outputs and benefits of the proposed workshop.

The diversity of the audience will also be taken into consideration, and workshops organised jointly between more than one institution will be favoured.

Payments will be made by ESAI following submission of invoices.

Successful applicants will be expected to submit an article to the ESAI e-zine describing the event.

Please send a completed application and one-page CV by e-mail to Sinead Macken () at least 3 months before the date of proposed workshop.
