Join the School of Irish Archaeology and Butler Gallery for the Big Dig Workshop for Cruinniú na nÓg on Saturday 15th June in Kilkenny City.

Children (ages 5 to 12) can learn to be archaeologists exploring the layers of history beneath their feet.

This exciting event is co-ordinated by Kilkenny County Council Heritage Office in association with Butler Gallery, and has been developed to celebrate the restoration and re-development of Evan’s Home as the new Butler Gallery site opening in 2020. Over the course of 800 years this area has had a fascinating history. It has been the location for an Augustinian Priory, a Jesuit College, a Military Hospital, a Military Barracks, an Asylum, an Infant’s School and an Old People’s Home. Through hands-on archaeology and storytelling workshops the children will uncover and explore the intriguing history and stories of this site.

Please note that children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the workshops.

The programme comprises 2 elements, each of which must be booked separately:

  1. “Dig for Treasure” Archaeology Workshop

Dig for treasure and artefacts, and, with the help of real archaeologists from the School of Irish Archaeology, learn about the people that lived on this site hundreds of years ago

  1. “Hidden Histories” Storytelling Workshop

Children will be guided by children’s theatre company Curious State to create their own story of the site’s history in a storytelling workshop designed to ignite their imagination.

We recommend that children attend the “Dig for Treasure” Archaeology Workshop, followed by the “Hidden Histories” Storytelling Workshop. However, as this may not be possible for everyone, children are welcome to attend just one workshop.

Date:                     Saturday 15th June 2019

Location:             Beside Evan’s Home – which is located behind the Carnegie Library on John’s Quay.
