Teac Tom Honoured with 2024 Laois Community and Voluntary Wellbeing Award
Midlands Park Hotel, Laois — In a touching tribute to their impactful work in mental health support and community wellbeing, Teac Tom has been awarded the 2024 Laois Community and Voluntary Wellbeing Award at the Laois PPN Volunteers Awards ceremony. Held at the Midlands Park Hotel, this award celebrates Teac Tom’s unwavering commitment to supporting individuals and families struggling with mental health challenges across the southeast of Ireland.
Teac Tom, formally known as the Thomas Hayes Trust CLG, was founded in February 2014 by Angela Hayes in memory of her son Thomas, who tragically died by suicide in 2011. The organisation has since become a vital source of support, with centres in Kilkenny city and Stradbally, Co. Laois, offering a range of services such as a 24-hour phone line, a walk-in listening service, and a mobile support unit. With a mission to make mental health services accessible, affordable, and immediate, Teac Tom allows clients to contact them directly, removing financial barriers by asking for a small donation per session if clients can afford it. This award underscores the importance of their services, especially in a time when demand is steadily increasing and funding remains limited.
The judges remarked “This is one incredible organisation. There needs to be a Teac Tom in every single community around the country”
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Teac Tom volunteer Sarah Graham, who was nominated for the Unsung Hero Award. Sarah’s dedication and compassion have been invaluable to Teac Tom and its clients. Her recognition as an “Unsung Hero” highlights the impact of individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes, providing support and care to those in need. Angela Hayes expressed her pride in Sarah’s nomination, saying, “Sarah embodies the heart and spirit of Teac Tom. Her kindness and commitment are what make our organisation thrive.”
In addition to their award, Teac Tom is announcing the release of a special remembrance candle, which will be available for purchase across the South East. To be lit on Christmas Day, the candle offers a meaningful way to remember loved ones who are no longer with us, symbolising unity and remembrance during the holiday season. All profits from the candle sales will go directly to supporting Teac Tom’s essential services, ensuring they remain available to all in the community.
This award, alongside Sarah’s nomination, marks a significant milestone for Teac Tom, recognising their work in fostering mental health awareness and support. With initiatives like the candle project and the upcoming ‘Dress-ember’ fundraiser, Teac Tom continues to shine a light on mental health and remembrance, reminding the community of the importance of connection, compassion, and support.
